In a world filled with screens and electronic gadgets, a new program is taking flight in schools,
captivating students with the wonders of the natural world right outside their classroom
windows -The birding conservation program in schools is an initiative aimed at introducing
students to the diverse and enchanting world of birds, fostering a connection between young
minds and the feathered inhabitants of our skies.
Emmanuel Mukisa who is the lead Conservation Educator of this birding program at Uganda
Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC), says that through this program, they are
looking at nurturing a deep sense of respect and responsibility towards birds and their habitats.
“Birds are not just creatures of flight; they are ambassadors of the natural world. Through
birdwatching, we open our eyes to the intricate web of life surrounding us, inspiring a
connection to nature.” He adds
The program goes beyond the classroom, inviting local birding experts to share their knowledge
and passion with students, field trips to nearby parks and nature reserves that provide
immersive experiences and allowing students to witness firsthand the astonishing diversity of
birdlife in their community.
Bringing birding into schools not only expands students’ knowledge of wildlife but also
cultivates important skills such as observation, critical thinking, and problem-solving, which are
crucial learning skills.
